The Ultimate Guide to Choosing the Right Patio for Your Home

Find Your Perfect Patio: A Homeowner’s Guide to Outdoor Living

When it comes to outdoor living in Australia, a home improvement – whether it’s a patio, carport, or enclosure – isn’t just an add-on; it’s a lifestyle upgrade.

Whether you’re dreaming of lazy summer afternoons, entertaining friends under cover, or simply creating a seamless flow in and outdoors, the right structure can completely transform how you enjoy your home. But with so many styles, materials, design options, and even builders available, knowing where to start can feel overwhelming.

At Apollo, we’ve helped thousands of Australians transform their outdoor areas into spaces that truly enhance their homes. Our goal is to create places our customers feel proud of – spaces that bring people together and make everyday moments with friends and family even more enjoyable. It’s all part of our vision: to inspire people to love the way they live.

While this guide isn’t a replacement for a personalised design consultation, it’s designed to give you a clearer understanding of your options, help you identify where to start, and feel more prepared when it’s time to take the next step.

Start With Your Space

The first step in choosing the right structure is understanding the space you have to work with. Consider things like:

  • The size and shape of your backyard, driveway or outdoor area
  • Where the sun hits during different parts of the day
  • Consider if weather impacts your space from a particular direction
  • How your indoor areas connect to the outdoors
  • Existing structures or landscaping you’d like to keep or work around

Match the Style to Your Home

Generally the best structures are those that feel like a natural extension, not an afterthought. Choosing a design that complements your architecture helps create a cohesive look.

Consider your roofline, colours and materials – they’ll guide you toward a patio or carport that fits seamlessly. Our observations:

  • Modern homes: Skillion or flyover patios complement clean lines, open spaces and a minimalist design aesthetic.
  • Traditional homes: Gable or heritage style designs, often with decorative slats, suit the character and charm of older properties.
  • Coastal or contemporary styles: Flat roof patios offer open, breezy designs that invite natural airflow – perfect for making the most of sea breezes while keeping things cool and comfortable.

Explore Patio Styles

Every home is different, and that’s why Apollo Patios offers flexible design solutions. Here’s a quick look at some of the most popular, but feel free to explore all of the options here.

Skillion: A simple, cost-effective, style that usually features one single-sloped roof.

Free-standing: Unlike attached patios, these structures have flexibility in where they are placed, allowing freedom in size, shape and style.

Enclosed: An effective use of patio space, an enclosed patio offers additional weather protection and living space as well as privacy.

Gable: A pitched roof design that creates an airy, spacious feel due to the increase ceiling height.

Flyover: Elevated to sit higher than your home’s gutter line, adding increased ventilation and natural air flow under the roof.

Think Function First

Before you lock in style or roof design, think about how you’ll use the space. For patios this may be;

Entertaining? You may want more covered space, downlights, or even incorporate space for a BBQ, smoker or outdoor kitchen.

Relaxing retreat? Consider adding privacy accessories such as slats, louvres, or even a timer-look ceiling for extra comfort.

Kids and family zone? You’ll want clear visibility, and reliable weather protection. Consider enclosing the space to make it usable all year round or suitable for your furry friend to enjoy.

Choose the Right Materials

Material choice matters – not just for looks, but for comfort, budget, and maintenance too. Key considerations are:

  • Is finding the most budget-friendly solution a priority?
  • Do you prefer a quieter roof during rain, or is that not a concern to you?
  • Would you like the space to stay cooler in summer and warmer in winter?
  • Is your home near the coast or in close proximity to a pool?

Each roofing option, whether single skin or insulated – offers its own set of benefits. By thinking through these questions, you’ll get a clearer idea of which solution best suits your space, lifestyle, and budget.

Our Design Consultants are here to guide you through the options, show you samples of roofing types and the profiles and colours available. This will help you weigh up the pros and cons to make a confident, informed decision.

Budgeting and Planning

Enhancing your outdoor space is an investment – when done thoughtfully, it can add lasting value to both your home and lifestyle.

Our team can provide guidance on:

  • Pricing and ranges for different patio types and materials
  • Solutions to reduce overall project cost
  • Planning for future upgrades (like screening or enclosing the space later)
  • Optional extras like lighting, louvres, or ceiling fans

Following your Design Consultation, our local Design Consultant will provide you with an Outdoor Solution, along with a quote – either at your meeting or a few days later, depending on the requirements of the project. This is an obligation-free quote, designed to make sure you are equipped with everything you need to make an informed decision on your project.

It’s easiest for us if you provide us key details like your street address (or postcode even), to enable us to start our process of understanding what is possible at your property.

From there, we’ll schedule a time that suits you for a free Design Consultation with one of our experienced consultants. This is your opportunity to tell us what you’re hoping to create – be it extra shade for summer BBQs, protection for your car, or a fully insulated outdoor room.

It’s a collaborative process, and we’re here to guide you through it with expert advice tailored to your goals and budget.

Step Three: Design and Quote

Following your consultation, your Design Consultant will provide a detailed design plan and obligation-free quote. In most cases, you can expect to see a quote from your Design Consultant within a few days.

Your Consultant won’t mind you checking in on their process, but please keep in mind they are working on other projects and attending Design apppointments each day. Either way, we make sure you’re equipped with everything you need to make an informed decision.

Step Four: Check Measure

Once you give the green light, and the paperwork is out of the way – one of our friendly Building Supervisors will visit your property for a check measure. Tips for creating outdoor spaces that please the whole family

The outdoor spaces of our home are often used by the whole family, so it makes sense to design them with versatility and inclusivity in mind, ensuring they cater to the diverse needs and preferences of each family member. This approach not only elevates the quality of family time but also enhances the overall ambience of our homes.

From playful toddlers and energetic pets to adults seeking a tranquil retreat – we’ve got a myriad of ideas at our disposal. Let us guide you through creating the ultimate outdoor sanctuary – a place where both adults and little ones, including our cherished four-legged family members, can thrive and create lasting memories together. Whether you’re envisioning a vibrant play area, a serene garden retreat, or a dynamic entertainment space, we’ve got the inspiration and strategies to help you realise your outdoor dreams.

Choose functional furniture

In crafting an outdoor space that’s welcoming for every family member while still remaining stylish, choosing furniture that doubles as storage is a smart design choice. Seek out pieces that marry sleek design with practicality – think sofas or bench seating with hidden storage, coffee tables that reveal hidden compartments with a simple lift, or dining tables that expand to accommodate extra guests when needed. These designs are not just about saving space; they’re about enriching your outdoor living area with a blend of utility and aesthetic appeal, allowing you to store toys, games and entertaining accoutrements out of sight.

Select materials that stand up to the elements and complement your outdoor décor, such as teak or synthetic wicker, ensuring your furniture remains a focal point of your outdoor area year after year. Additionally, consider outdoor sofas with washable covers and ensure all furniture is stable and heavy enough to not easily tip over, safeguarding against curious hands or paws.

Incorporate play spaces

Dedicating a section of your outdoor area to play goes beyond sticking unsightly equipment in the corner of the garden; it’s about integrating creative elements that stimulate imagination while complementing your outdoor décor. Introducing innovative and stylish play features can transform your garden into an enchanting haven for children. A beautifully crafted wooden playhouse or a chic, minimalist sandbox can provide hours of entertainment without detracting from the garden’s overall aesthetic.

Or consider the addition of a swing or slide set for your patio. Wonderfully compact, these not only serve as a delightful play space for children but also an effortless day care for adults, bringing an element of whimsical sophistication to your outdoor setting. Opt for natural materials and designs that echo the style of your outdoor furniture, ensuring these play zones enhance rather than compromise your design ethos.

Freedom with boundaries

Enclosures play a pivotal role in crafting a kid and pet-friendly outdoor space. They provide a safe boundary that keeps unwanted wildlife out while allowing fresh air and natural light in. A screened wall around your patio can help you create a seamless transition between indoor comfort and the beauty of outdoor living. This addition not only enhances the usability of your space, allowing for extended evenings and protection from the elements, but also adds an aesthetic element that can be customised to match the architectural style of your home.

Incorporating gates with child-safe latches further ensures that little adventurers remain within the safety of your outdoor space. For pets, especially dogs, ensure the enclosure is of an appropriate height to prevent escape attempts and consider integrating a small, pet-specific entrance that allows them freedom to move between inside and outside as they please.

Provide shade and shelter

Integrating elements of shade and shelter not only serves the practical purpose of protecting your outdoor living areas from the unpredictability of fickle weather but also plays a significant role in defining the aesthetic and ambience of your garden. Modern patios adorned with lush climbing vines or elegant, retractable awnings present versatile shade solutions that can be adjusted to suit the day’s needs, ensuring comfort without compromising on style.

Greenery can offer a dynamic interaction between the built environment and the natural landscape, where the changing seasons bring new colours, shadows and textures to your outdoor area. Cantilever umbrellas offer flexible shade options, easily adjustable throughout the day, while adding a modern touch to your outdoor decor.

Creating a safe, kid and pet-friendly outdoor environment does not have to mean compromising on style. By choosing the right furniture, designing engaging and secure play areas and implementing strategic enclosures, your outdoor space can cater to every member of your family.

Remember, the goal is to create an area that promotes safety and enjoyment, fostering a love for the outdoors in your whole family. This approach transforms your garden or patio into a sophisticated retreat, where functionality and beauty harmonise to create a truly inviting outdoor living area.

Which roofing is best suited to waterside living?

Living by the water is a dream for many. The serene views, fresh air, and calming sound of waves or running water are just a few of the drawcards of waterside living. However, this idyllic lifestyle comes with its own unique set of challenges, especially when it comes to patio construction.

Building near water often means dealing with harsh environmental conditions that can take a toll on structures. Salt spray, high humidity, potential flooding and severe weather can significantly impact the longevity and durability of steel structures, posing a real challenge for homeowners and builders alike.

Some of the key challenges include:

High humidity and salt spray: Coastal environments have high humidity levels, and the salt content in the air speeds up corrosion. Salt spray results in salt deposits on building materials, which can lead to more rapid deterioration. This is a particular concern near the ocean but can also affect structures near large bodies of water due to the moisture-laden air.

Unwashed areas: Rainwater naturally washes away salt deposits from surfaces. However, structures like patios and carports have large unwashed areas where rainwater doesn’t reach, such as the underside of insulated panels. Salt can accumulate and accelerate corrosion in these areas.

Weather extremes: Coastal and waterside areas often experience high winds and storm surges, which can damage structures not designed to withstand such forces. More frequent and severe weather events can compromise building materials and exacerbate the effects of corrosion.

Proximity to pools: Even being near pools poses challenges due to the chlorine and other chemicals used in pool maintenance. These chemicals can also contribute to the corrosion of nearby structures.

To ensure longevity and durability of structures built in coastal and waterside homes, it’s essential to select materials and design strategies that can withstand harsh environmental conditions.

At Apollo Patios, we prefer UniCote® Coastal because it stands out as a product specifically engineered to address the unique challenges posed by coastal and waterside environments. A pre-painted steel product designed with advanced anti-corrosive properties, UniCote® Coastal is highly resistant to the damaging effects of salt spray, humidity, and extreme weather conditions.

Why UniCote® Coastal is the best choice for coastal areas

Superior corrosion resistance: UniCote® Coastal features an enhanced metallic coating system that provides excellent resistance to corrosion. The specially formulated coating significantly reduces the rate of degradation caused by salt-laden air, ensuring the longevity of the panels.

Advanced paint technology: The product uses advanced paint technology that includes a primer and topcoat designed to withstand the harsh coastal environment. This multi-layer paint system offers an additional barrier against corrosion, UV rays and physical wear, making it ideal for waterside areas.

Durability in unwashed areas: The coating on UniCote® Coastal is particularly effective in unwashed areas, where traditional materials may fail. Its robust coating ensures that even in areas not regularly washed by rain, such as the undersides of panels, the material remains protected from salt buildup and corrosion.

High weather resistance: UniCote® Coastal is designed to endure extreme weather conditions. Its strong adherence to the substrate prevents peeling and chipping, even in high wind and storm-prone areas. This ensures the structural integrity of buildings during severe weather events.

Aesthetic longevity: Beyond functional durability, UniCote® Coastal maintains its aesthetic appeal over time. The high-quality finish provides excellent colour fastness, ensuring that buildings retain their vibrant appearance despite any potentially harsh waterside environment.

Sustainability: UniCote® Coastal is environmentally friendly, manufactured using processes that minimise environmental impact. Its longevity and durability mean fewer replacements and repairs, contributing to sustainable building practices.

Enhanced coating: The metallic coating is 30% thicker, providing superior protection in harsh waterside environments. This thicker coating acts as an additional shield against the corrosive effects of salt spray, high humidity and chlorine from pools, significantly reducing the likelihood of rust and deterioration.

Warranty coverage: UniCote® offers site-specific warranties of varying durations for UniCote® Coastal depending on the environment and distance from water. Simply email the address of the project and Apollo will confirm the warranty you’ll receive with UniCote®. The UniCote® warranty also covers unwashed areas and the ceiling of insulated panel.

Maintenance plan: UniCote® Coastal comes with a comprehensive maintenance plan designed to ensure your insulated panels last for many years, even in the most challenging waterside conditions. This proactive approach not only extends the lifespan of the panels but also reduces long-term maintenance costs and enhances overall building performance.

Choosing the right materials is crucial to ensuring the longevity and durability of structures in waterside areas. UniCote® Coastal provides a robust solution with its superior corrosion resistance, advanced paint technology, and high weather resilience. By selecting UniCote® Coastal, you can enjoy the serene waterside lifestyle without compromising on the structural integrity and aesthetic appeal of your building.

How Much Does A Pergola Roof Cost?

Looking at building a roof on your pergola and wondering what it’ll cost? It’s wise to understand the costs involved in building a pergola roof before diving into things. The cost of building a roof for your pergola depends on several factors, including size, roof style, materials chosen and any extra features you may want to add.

Skillion pergola

For those wanting to get straight to the point, contact our team for a quick quote on your ideal pergola roof design.

Enquire now.

What influences the price of a pergola roof

When it comes to pergola installation, you’re going to have to consider several factors that directly impact how much the roof will cost you. With the exception of laying a foundation and labour costs, the roof will probably be one of the most expensive aspects to purchase for your pergola. Size is another significant factor to consider. The bigger your pergola is, the bigger its roof would need to be. This tallies up your roof costs pretty fast. Here are some other factors that influence your pergola cost:

Flatroof pergola

Pergola roofing types:

When designing your pergola, you must choose what type of roof you want. The pergola roof type you select will also significantly affect how much your roof will cost. This is because each roof type requires different quantities and materials to construct. Here are the roof types we offer:

  • Skillion roof pergolas
  • Gabled roof pergolas
  • Flat roof pergolas

Pergola

Pergola roofing style

The roofing style you choose for your pergola will significantly affect pergola prices. Basic pergola roof styles may cost less than your more complex design would. Opt for the best quality roofing materials to create the ideal outdoor space. This will ensure that your pergola roof lasts. Here are our roof style options:

Single-skin pergola roofing

We offer single-skin pergola roofing, our premium Apollo Unilink 2000 or Unilink Outdoor Flat Mark II roof sheeting. Our single-skin roofing options allow you to have a lovely breezy pergola.

Insulated panel pergola roofing

Our Insulated panel pergola roofing options are an all-in-one complete roof and ceiling combination, providing shade, warmth and fantastic noise absorption. With our Insulated panel pergola roofing, you’re promised year-round use of your pergola, come rain or shine. At Apollo Patios, we use Australian-made insulted roof panels made with UniCote® Steel on the top-side and ceiling-side.

Pergola roofing profiles

In addition to the roof styles you can choose from, we offer different roof profiles to customise your pergola roof. The price of your pergola roof will also depend on the roof profile you select. Here are the options we offer:

Single-skin pergola roofing

  • Apollo Unilink 2000
  • Unilink 2000 Outdoor Flat Mark II

Insulated panel pergola roofing

  • Trimlink Profile
  • Corrugated profile

Canal Pergola

Pergola roofing colours

We also have a fantastic range of colours for you to choose from to ensure you can match your pergola roof perfectly to the colour of your home. Our shades also vary in price due to their mixing process. Choose from a range of top-side and ceiling-side colours. Explore the full colour range here.

Pergola roofing materials

After you’ve decided what style, size and colour you want your pergola roof to be, the next factor that’ll affect the cost of your pergola will be your material costs. Pergola builders calculate how much material you need per square metre. This also depends on the type of roof you choose to build. For example, gabled or skillion roofs will use more panels because they have a higher roof pitch.

Get a quote on pergola roofing

Another factor that plays a role in determining the price of your pergola roof is the pergola builder you choose to install it. For those experienced DIYers, you’ll save cash by not hiring a pergola builder. When you pay for an expert to install your pergola roof, you will be charged for labour, but you’ll be investing in a more professional result.

That’s where we come in! Now that you know what factors affect pergola installation costs, let’s work on a quote for your dream pergola. Feel like your ideal pergola is just financially out of reach? We offer reasonable finance options to help you get the outdoor living space you’ve always dreamed of.

Pergolas Vs Verandahs – What's The Difference?

Do you want to add a sheltered outdoor space to your home but can’t choose between a pergola and a verandah? Maybe you aren’t sure what the difference is between a pergola and a verandah?

No matter the question, we at Apollo Patios are here to help. Today’s guide walks you through the design and functionality differences between a pergola and a verandah, along with their pros and cons to help you create an outdoor space that works for you and your home.

Let’s dive in and see their differences.

In This Article

Gable pergola

What Are The Design Differences Between A Pergola And A Verandah?

The biggest design difference between a pergola and a verandah is that a pergola can be added to any outdoor space, whereas a verandah must be attached to your home. A pergola can be added anywhere as a freestanding structure, but it can also be attached to your home if you prefer. It’s a great way to transform the space without breaking the bank.

A verandah is attached to your home, often the front, and is used to cover an outdoor area or wrap around your home, covering multiple sides of your home. A verandah can add shade and protection while covering any outdoor living spaces or decks around your home. A pergola typically does not wrap around the house, even when attached to one of your exterior walls.

At Apollo Patios, you can add a variety of roofs to your verandah to create a design that suits you and offers the weather protection you want. A gable roof, curved roof, pitched roof, or flat roof are among the most common. Apollo Patios can also customise a pergola to suit your specifications, whether that be a particular size or style.

What Are The Functionality Differences Between A Pergola And A Verandah?

A pergola and verandah can be used to expand your living space in your home, but with a pergola, you have more flexibility about where this living space is. In larger gardens, a pergola can add an extra dining area in the middle of your yard, whereas your verandah can only add space immediately next to your home.

A verandah’s functional purpose is to offer more shelter than a pergola. For this reason verandahs are often installed at entrances of your home, to ensure that you are out of the weather upon arrival home. Verandahs provide greater protection from the rain and wind, making a space that is suitable to use as storage, feature planter boxes or even to be used as a relaxation space with some outdoor furniture. Pergolas are designed to make a statement in your garden and offer a versatile space that offers partial shade or privacy, rather than offering complete protection overhead.

What Are The Maintenance Requirements Of A Pergola And Verandah?

Both a pergola and verandah require regular maintenance throughout the year, but a verandah does require more maintenance, thanks to the inclusion of a roof, gutters and drain pipes.

Maintaining A Pergola

Maintaining a pergola is relatively easy and involves hosing down your pergola to remove any residual dirt, grime or salt crystals as they will compromise your structure. This should be done at least twice a year.

In addition, any vines or climbing plants you have added to your pergola must be trimmed regularly, roughly twice a year for vines unless the specific plants you have used have other maintenance requirements.

Maintaining A Verandah

Verandahs also need regular maintenance. Veranda maintenance mainly involves keeping them clean. As with a pergola, maintaining your verandah is essentially keeping your verandah clean. A regular clean will assist the rain with removing dirt and debris, which could cause problems for your verandah.

Unlike a pergola, your verandah will likely have gutters and drains that need to be routinely checked to ensure they remain unblocked, especially before storms or the wetter seasons. A good guide is to inspect as often as every three months, and clean your gutters and downpipes every six months.

What Are The Benefits Of A Pergola?

There are some benefits to a pergola, listed below for you to check out.

They Extend Your Living Space

A pergola is an easy way to extend your living space without extending your home. A pergola attached to your home will extend your living space, adding an extra outdoor area that you can use when the weather permits.

How you choose to use your pergola space is up to you, but they offer wonderful spaces for entertaining, however keep in mind they do not offer complete protection overhead, if the weather should turn wet. You can use the extended living space to add variety to your garden, too, changing the purpose of the space as often as you like to suit your lifestyle. A unique outdoor atmosphere is easily created with a pergola in your garden!

They Add Privacy

Pergolas are an excellent way to add privacy to your garden. You can also customise how much privacy the structures offer, tailoring them perfectly to your needs. By adding decorative panels or slats you can ensure that your neighbours can’t view your private space, allowing you to relax in your pergola worry-free.

A freestanding pergola offers wonderful privacy, too. You can add a free-standing pergola over your spa to shield prying eyes and ensure you enjoy the hot water and bubbles.

They Offer Outstanding Customisation

You can choose a pergola in any design or size that you want. Apollo Patios offers unbelievable customisation for pergolas, customising everything from the size to the colour and screens used to create a unique pergola that truly suits your home.

The customisation options are a huge benefit, allowing you to add a stylish addition to your garden that can match the design of your home for a cohesive look.

What Are The Drawbacks Of A Pergola?

The main drawbacks of a pergola are listed below.

They Require Frequent Maintenance

Although a pergola will last for years, it does require maintenance and general cleaning every six months or more.

Apollo Patios offer a superior paint coat that boasts (depending on your choice), up to a fifteen-year warranty, so you don’t need to worry about maintaining the appearance of your pergola.

With that said, you will still need to regularly clean your pergola and make sure that any plants or climbing vines are kept in control.

When Should You Buy A Pergola Over A Verandah?

You should purchase a pergola over a veranda when you want an outdoor living space not connected to your home or where you’d like the space to be almost completely open to the elements. A pergola is your better option if you want to have your own distinct area that isn’t enclosed.

You can read more about building a custom-designed pergola with Apollo Patios if a customised pergola seems like the right choice for you.

verandah

What Are The Benefits Of A Verandah?

Verandahs have a few benefits, which are outlined below for you.

They Offer Weather Protection

Verandahs will provide shade from the sun and protection from wind and rain during the winter, allowing you to use your outdoor space year-round. Weather protection means you don’t need to factor in the weather when planning to use your outdoor space, increasing its usability. You can entertain outdoors come rain or shine, allowing alfresco dining whenever you want.

The roof of a verandah also offers protection from the sun’s heat, allowing you to use the space without worrying about overheating.

They Can Be Sustainable

Verandahs can be a sustainable option, too. Not only does your verandah protect you from the hot sun or wind, but your home, too. The verandah prevents hot sun rays from entering your home, reducing how often you need to use your air conditioning in the summer to keep your home cool. This can save you money in the long term and reduce your carbon footprint.

They Add Value To Your Home

A stylish verandah installed correctly can add value to your home, allowing you to sell the property for more money should you choose to sell. A veranda can also attract more potential buyers, as it can make the entrance to your home feel grand and cleverly designed. Plus, if a verandah is already installed, it is one less task for potential buyers when they move into the property.

You can blend indoor and outdoor space with a verandah, and use your verandah as a modern mud room and with many design options, you will surely find one that you love and will add value to your home.

What Are The Drawbacks Of A Verandah?

The drawbacks of a verandah are outlined below for you.

They Require Regular Maintenance

Verandahs require regular maintenance, which can be time-consuming for some families. Like a pergola, your verandah needs to be cleaned regularly with the addition of needing to check that the roof is clean and gutters are clear.

Verandahs from Apollo Patios are designed with weather-proof, high-quality materials but some maintenance is still involved. If you don’t want to spend time cleaning your roof and gutters you could opt to have them professionally cleaned. Failing to clean your verandah guttering regularly can lead to blocked and overflowing gutters, which can cause water to possibly pool in places.

They Can Be Cold To Use In The Winter

A verandah without heating can be too cold to use during the winter months, reducing how often you can use the veranda. The cold might not be an issue depending on where you live in Australia, but it is worth considering.

Adding heating to your verandah is an option, but would require you to have electricity on your porch or deck.

When Should You Buy A Verandah Over A Pergola?

A verandah should be purchased to add a sheltered space to your home. Attached to your exterior walls, a verandah provides shelter and an extended outdoor space that can suit many homes and enhance your outdoor living appeal. Should you want to offer shelter on multiple sides of your home, a wrap-around verandah is the ideal option, with customised designs available.

A veranda is ideal if you want to keep your interior rooms cool and leave screen doors open for the breeze. You can read more about a custom-designed verandah with Apollo Patios and see the diverse range on offer, should the veranda be the right choice for you.

What Are The Design Differences Between A Pergola And Gazebo?

The biggest difference between a pergola and a gazebo is the material they are constructed of. A pergola is a sturdy patio style structure, offering a permanent solution with partial protection overhead due to it not being enclosed with a roof.

Whereas, a gazebo is more of a temporary or short term structure usually available to buy from a hardware store and install yourself. These come in a range of materials which change the suitability of the gazebo for rougher weather.

While pergolas can sometimes be added to existing structures, a gazebo always stands as a separate fixture, often becoming a focal point in your garden. Unlike pergolas, a gazebo is a four-sided structure, but it is not uncommon to see six or eight-sided gazebos with a pitched roof to allow the rain to run off. A pergola often has four open sides, although decorative panels can be added to provide privacy.

While a pergola usually covers an existing deck, pavers or grass, usually a gazebo is placed on top of the grass or concreted area.

Patio Vs Pergola – What's The Difference?

Do you want to redesign your yard and aren’t sure whether you want a patio or a pergola? Maybe you aren’t sure what the difference is between a patio and a pergola? Or are looking to spruce up your outdoor space and can’t decide which would be best?

No matter the question, we are here to help. Today’s guide walks you through the main design and functionality differences between a patio and pergola, along with their pros and cons to help you create an outdoor area that works for you and your family.

Let’s dive in and see the differences.

In This Article:

What Are The Design Differences Between A Patio And A Pergola?

The major design difference between a patio and a pergola is that a patio has a solid roof structure, offering full protection overhead from the elements. It is designed to extend the living space of your home. In contrast, a pergola is an open or partially open outdoor structure that doesn’t usually have a roof.

A patio is typically used to expand your home, converting part of your outdoor space or garden into an extension of your living area. A patio usually directly joins the outside wall of your property, with a roof overhead. A well designed patio will enable light to enter your patio while still offering protection from the elements, providing the perfect area to relax or play.

A pergola, however, is often a freestanding structure that becomes an enhancing feature of your garden. Some pergolas might be attached to an existing structure, like your home or a wall. Pergola structures are usually built open, using beams to provide shelter and some shade.

Some choose to add more privacy to their gardens with pergolas that feature walls or decorative style panels across the roof; they are incredibly versatile, with many companies, like Apollo Patios, offering customised pergolas to suit any garden.

While there are different patios and pergolas, both often feature plants. Climbing plants, hanging plants, trellis plants, or potted plants can be used with either a patio or pergola to add privacy, create a green space, or serve as a covered garden.

Gable pergola

What Are The Functionality Differences Between A Patio And A Pergola?

The most significant functionality difference between a patio and a pergola is that a patio creates an additional living space for your home. In contrast, a pergola is more often viewed as a standalone structure and does not need to be connected to the home at all however can still be used similarly to a patio for relaxation.

Patios are often used as an outdoor living area, extending from your living or dining space in your existing house. These spaces serve as outdoor entertaining areas, with a protective roof that provides shelter from the elements.

A pergola also serves as an outdoor space for entertainment but tends to be a separate structure for example a pool pergola and because it is not enclosed, may not be suitable in all weather conditions.

Of course you can decide which works for you or design a mix of both a patio and pergola. Depending on the location of your structure, you can use it as a shelter for your vehicle, to eat underneath, or even offer protection for a hot tub.

What Are The Maintenance Requirements Of A Patio And A Pergola?

The maintenance requirements of a patio and pergola are slightly different. We have outlined them below to see how to maintain your pergola or patio.

Maintaining A Patio

To maintain a patio, you need to carry out maintenance and cleaning. If your patio is installed in an area that in unwashed by rain or sheltered, you need to wash it down with water using a sponge or soft cloth. This should be done at least every six months, with particular care being taken to prevent any accumulation of salt crystals or industrial dirt. If you need further assistance please reach out to your local Apollo Patios Customer Care team.

Maintaining A Pergola

Maintaining a pergola is very similar, however often pergolas incorporate plants in various forms. Therefore any garden-related maintenance can be quite time-consuming if not kept in hand. To keep your pergola in good condition, you must regularly hose down your pergola to remove grime and dirt.

Any vines or climbing plants you have added must also be trimmed regularly. Twice a year should be sufficient for vines, although some plants might need to be trimmed periodically if they encroach on the living space.

What Are The Benefits Of A Patio?

There are several benefits to a patio in your outdoor space. We have outlined them below with some details for you to check out now.

They Offer A Spacious Feel To Smaller Houses

Patios extend your living space and can make smaller houses feel more spacious and larger. You can entertain on your patio instead of using a smaller dining space in your home. Homes with French doors, sliding doors or stacker doors can open out to an alluring outdoor space, perfect for dinner parties, barbecues, or entertaining.

The open design of a patio allows plenty of space and fresh air without feeling cramped. The patio can also help your home feel more spacious, as there aren’t walls around the space, allowing for more movement for your guests and unrestricted views.

They Can Add Value To Your Home

A patio can dramatically increase the value of your home, giving you the added convenience of having a patio now and should you decide to sell, the benefit of attracting more potential buyers to your home. A patio acts as an extra room, increasing the square meterage of your house. Your house’s value is likely to increase, especially if the space enhances the home, offering families more room and flexibility.

Should your house be unable to be extended any other way (through extensions or renovations), a patio can increase the value of your home, attracting more buyers and generating a quick sale. Of course, you must check with your local council whether this needs planning approval.

They Offer Protection From The Weather

Patios provide protection from the weather, allowing you to use your outdoor spaces year-round. The roof can offer protection from extreme weather conditions. You don’t need to worry about rain ruining your furniture or soaking your guests. Likewise, extreme heat can be deflected, allowing you to use the patio while still enjoying a breeze or the comfort of your fan.

Some choose to add walls to their patio area, offering side protection from the wind and rain. These can be temporary structures, like portable screens, allowing you to use them as and when you see fit.

Patio internal

What Are The Drawbacks Of A Patio?

There are some drawbacks to a patio in your yard, outlined below.

You Need A Level Surface

Patios need to be built on a level surface. Should you not have a level surface in your garden, it will add expense to level the ground. You might need to cut and fill the existing ground to create a level surface, which can take time, or enlist the help of suitable trades.

Levelling the surface can take some time, too, adding to the installation time for your patio.

When Should You Buy A Patio Over A Pergola?

You should purchase a patio over a pergola when you want to extend the space in your home and offer more comprehensive protection and shielding from the elements while adding value to your home.

A patio is ideal when you want to open your back door and step immediately into an outdoor space that can be used for entertaining or for children to play.

Pergola

What Are The Benefits Of A Pergola?

There are a number of benefits to a pergola. We have broken them down below for you to check out now.

They Add Privacy

Pergolas can add privacy to your property. These outdoor structures can add as much or as little privacy to your garden as you wish. They can make it harder for neighbours to peer into your garden, allowing you to relax or entertain in your pergola worry-free.

The privacy they offer makes these free-standing structures a good option to sit over a hot tub, adding privacy and offering some protection from the weather, too.

They Vary Your Outdoor Space

A pergola can vary your outdoor space and offer year-round use, too. The pergola you choose might add a different material or style to your garden, increasing its aesthetic appeal. If you add climbing plants, these can also vary your outdoor space, increasing the privacy your pergola can provide.

A pergola is extremely versatile. You can use your pergola as an outdoor dining space, offering room for large dinner parties, barbecues, or an area for your firepit – the perfect outdoor zone to unwind during summer evenings. You can also design a pergola that provides some screening overhead to allow you to use an area that you can’t currently use. Perhaps it’s too hot or sunny? With added shade overhead the space will become a light, bright and enjoyable space.

They Add Style To Your Garden

Modern pergolas come in various styles and designs, adding a unique flair to your garden. Whether you have something in mind or need guidance, you can find one that is aesthetically pleasing and practical for your garden and lifestyle.

There are lots of pergola ideas online for you to use as inspiration, with Apollo Patios offering plenty of pre-designed or custom pergolas for you to check out.

Pergola freestanding

What Are The Drawbacks Of A Pergola?

The main drawbacks of a pergola are outlined below to provide you with a balanced insight into pergolas.

They Require Maintenance

It is worth noting that pergolas need cleaning, ideally every 6 months, and especially if you are located in an area that does not get rain. While this a relatively quick and easy process, it’s good to plan to allow some time for some general cleaning and maintenance.

The Risk Of Termites

Apollo Patios don’t use any timber in their pergola designs. They specifically design their pergolas only using aluminum or steel posts. For this reason, there is no risk of termites weakening the structural integrity of your pergola or causing significant damage.

When Should You Buy A Pergola Over A Patio?

Pergolas can be customised easily to suit your backyard, whether you want them to connect to your home or be a separate feature in your garden.

They are the right structure for you if you want privacy added to your garden or a relaxing space to enjoy the oudoors without the added cost of a roof. Your pergola can add style and flair to your outdoor area, providing a unique living space that you can use for entertainment or private enjoyment.

Pergolas Sizes Guide

Pergolas offer the perfect space for outdoor socialising and dining. Whether it is a respite from the sun or a space to relax that you crave, or even adding value to your home, Apollo Patios has the pergola for you.

Deciding what size your pergola should be can be one of the hardest parts of choosing your pergola, leaving many people overwhelmed and unsure where to start.

At Apollo Patios, all our pergolas are fully customisable rather than standard set sizes, which means that your pergola is designed specifically for you and your lifestyle and how you want to use the outdoor space.

Our guide explores standard pergola sizes to help you find a size that works for you.

Let’s explore these sizes together in our size guide.

Pet area

What Are The Standard Pergolas Sizes?

While we can customise to your specific requirements, here are some of the more popular pergola sizing options we see. We have broken them down into small, medium, and large pergolas to help you quickly find the perfect size for you.

All the pergola sizes are given in meters.

Small Pergolas

Small pergolas are usually created as rectangular or squares, with square sizes like 2 x 2 m or 2.5 x 2.5 m, or rectangular sizes like 1. 8 x 1.2 m. These are ideal for use as a path archway, sitting over a garden bench, or a small sitting area and two chairs, suiting smaller gardens or homes that don’t often entertain large parties.

Small pergolas are perfect for growing plants with or covering part of a small patio, as a yard’s centrepiece or grill canopy, providing a practical shaded space while cooking. In addition to square or rectangle shapes we also offer pergolas that are not straight-forward shapes, such as a triangle shaped pergola. This may be where you want one side of your pergola to protrude or attach to the home, please ask your Design Consultant for more detail.

Medium Pergolas

Medium pergolas typically come as squares or rectangles. You can find medium square sizes like 3 m x 3 m and rectangular spaces like 5 x 3 m. These popular sizes offer space for a small seating area, suitable for entertaining some guests or serving your family dinner alfresco. An outdoor dining table should fit comfortably under a medium-sized pergola.

Medium pergolas also offer space as a dedicated plant area, or providing privacy and protection from the elements for items such as an outdoor shower or spa. They are sometimes used as partial shade for an outdoor living space, such as near decks or pools.

Large Pergolas

Large pergolas are ideal for a large deck or patio area. Square sizes of these include 10 x 10 m, and rectangular pergolas are often 3 x 4 m or 6 x 3 m. These sizes can house a round dining table and chairs, or a pub-style table and chairs. These larger pergolas also have space for an outdoor couch, making fantastic relaxed seating areas. These suit larger patios or homes that host large parties where all guests want to be shaded.

These pergolas can also be used to break up larger gardens, creating different sections of your patio or deck. You can decide whether your pergola is open or incorporates additional protection such as a decorative screen canopy. You can have any of these sizes, or a custom-sized pergola created by Apollo Patios, bringing your outdoor dreams to life.

What To Consider Before Choosing A Pergola Size?

Several factors should be considered before you choose a pergola size for your garden. Below, each factor is broken down to help you find the right size pergola for your yard.

Available Space

Start by measuring the space in your yard for the pergola. Consider whether you want the pergola to fill the available space or sit as a centrepiece in the middle to help make your choice. A larger pergola could fill all of your area, but if you don’t want it to fill the entire garden, you could opt for a smaller attached pergola to free up more space in your yard.

The Type Of Pergola You Want

The type of pergola you want should be considered before choosing the size. A freestanding pergola will look good no matter its size if it fits the space. However, an attached pergola that is too big or small for the wall or building it’s attached to can quickly look out of proportion.

Furniture You Want In The Pergola

To get the correct size pergola, measure the furniture that you want to place in your pergola. You will want enough space for all the furniture to fit comfortably, with room to access the furniture and move around without bumping into items.

You don’t want the space to feel cluttered; opting for a walkway or space between each piece of furniture will make the pergola feel larger, even if you are working with a smaller space. Use a clear space to lay out your furniture as a test for how much space you need.

Purpose Of Your Pergola

Do you need to add privacy or protection to your current outdoor area? Is your pergola to be an outdoor dining space? Are you adding a pergola to create a defined outdoor zone?

Ask yourself these questions to determine the purpose of the pergola. Knowing its purpose can help you decide the correct pergola size for your home. You might not need a large pergola if the intended purpose is shade for your dining table or to cover a small patio.

Outdoor Living

Why Are Determining Pergola Sizes & Dimensions Important For Planning?

Determining sizes and dimensions when planning your pergola is vital to ensure that you have a pergola that is going to be useful now and into the future. Several reasons why are outlined below for you to explore.

Your Pergola Might Not Fit The Space

To ensure that your pergola fits both your vision and your backyard it is important to measure your desired pergola and visualise how much space you will have once it is completed. Your Design Consultant will guide you to ensure the right pergola for your space is chosen. The same applies for pergolas that are too small for the area; these could look lost in larger yards or not cover enough of the yard, thus not providing the shade you wanted.

Both freestanding and attached pergolas have this issue, with attached pergolas easily looking out of proportion or falling short of the patio if the incorrect size is ordered.

Your Pergola Is Not Fit For Purpose

Getting the size wrong with your pergola can leave it unfit for it’s intended purpose. This might mean you have to get a smaller set of furniture or incorporate less into the space than you anticipated. It’s always best to measure and mark out with a tape so you can visualise it’s size and ensure it will be the perfect pergola.

Your Pergola Costs More

You could incur extra costs if you do not plan it carefully and purchase the wrong size pergola. Adapting or extending your pergola once built can be costly as well as a waste of materials.

In some cases, the pergola might not be suitable to fit the space with adjustments, leaving you to pay twice for another, more suitable pergola. Measuring correctly and working out the dimensions for your pergola will save you time and money in the long run.

Incorporate a modern decorative panel style cover to create a unique structure that suits your home. Pergolas have become incredibly popular these days, with many people choosing to add them to their homes. But before you start buying materials or instructing builders, you need to know whether you need council approval to build a pergola.

In today’s post, we will tell you if you need a building permit and walk you through the process of getting approval to ensure that your pergola dreams can become a reality. This guide will have the answers for you if you want to create the pergola yourself or let Apollo Patios do the hard work for you.

Let’s dive in.

Do I Need A Building Permit To Build A Pergola?

Yes, you typically do need a building permit to build a pergola.

But keep in mind, this can change depending on where you live and how big your pergola will be. So, it’s always smart to chat with your local government council or a building pro before you start your project.

We know getting a permit might seem like a bit of a challenge, but it’s essential for making sure your pergola is both safe and above board.

While regulations and approval processes will differ depending on the state and council an approval will usually review whether or not the project will meet the following:

  • Boundary and front setback rules
  • Planning, zoning controls and overlays
  • Management and collection of Stormwater
  • Engineering of the structure (if required)

At Apollo Patios, we handle all permits and approvals, so you don’t need to add stress to your workload.

How Can I Build A Pergola Without Council Approval?

The short answer is this is not advised. It is also best to check with your local council or certifier as some councils might have additional building regulations that your pergola must meet before being built.

Once you have satisfied your council. You can either build the pergola yourself or contact Apollo Patios for a custom-designed pergola. Apollo, handle all permits and approvals for each project they build, and work with the council and certifiers on your behalf.

Build A Pergola

Why Do I Need Council Approval To Build A Pergola?

Pergola structures need council approval for a few reasons, and you should be aware of them before building commences. Here are a few things to consider:

Complying With Regulations

Council approval ensures that your pergola meets the necessary regulations including the Australian Building Code. Although regulations are generally similar across the country, it’s best to check as some councils might have additional regulations or requirements. The regulations ensure that your pergola is built according to legal and planning regulations and will be safe for you and your family to use.

Maintaining Aesthetics

Councils often have guidelines to ensure that new structures do not impact the neighbourhood’s visual appeal. Council approval ensures that your pergola meets any aesthetic guidelines. These guidelines might be stricter if you live in a heritage conservation area.

Elimination of Unlicensed Builders

Obtaining council approval helps to prevent unlicensed builders from working on your project. This guarantees that only qualified professionals will be involved in constructing your pergola, ensuring it is built safely and will be suitable for use.

Protection during Property Sales

When selling your property, it’s important to be aware of potential liabilities associated with structures that lack council approval. Failure to secure approval can result in liability for the property owner, even 10 years or more after the sale. By obtaining council approval for your pergola, you can avoid such issues and ensure a smooth transaction when selling your home.

Avoiding Fines

You are at risk of hefty fines, expensive alternations, or needing to demolish the pergola if the council discover the pergola was built without a permit or approval.

Waterfront pergola

What Is The Council Approval Process?

Every council can have different guidelines regarding approval for pergola construction. However, they usually follow the same basic principles. A step-by-step guide below breaks this down for you:

Step 1: Speak To Your Local Council

Contact your local city council, who will be your go-to source for the requirements and rules your pergola must meet to be correctly constructed.

They will inform you whether or not you need a permit and any steps you must follow to gain a permit.

Step 2: Hire A Professional Pergola Builder

Hiring a professional builder isn’t a necessity, but we recommend it. A local builder will be aware of the local government guidelines for pergolas and will have an insight into what the council approvals usually look like. They can guide you in creating a pergola that will be approved by the local council and constructed swiftly.

Apollo Patios has registered builders nationwide, providing you access to a local builder who can help bring your pergola dreams into reality. Apollo Patios will work with you to customise your pergola, handle the paperwork, and have the pergola assembled quickly using the best possible materials.

Step 3: Get Building Approval

Once you have a design for your pergola and a builder ready, submit your application to your local council. Should you use Apollo Patios, we have a designated team of experts who handle the planning application process. They are experts with all local regulations, ensuring that your application is submitted correctly with the required detail and documentation.

If you are successful, you will be given a building certifier or certificate of approval from your council. This confirms the design of your pergola and that it has been assessed with the building code of Australia and approved to proceed. This is your green light to start construction.

Step 4: Begin Building

With the correct paperwork, you can start building your pergola. You must follow the approved plans to avoid any violations that could leave you with fines or expensive alterations.

If for any reason you do not need a permit to build your pergola, you can confirm your design with your builder and skip straight to this step.

FAQs

How Close To A Property Boundary Line Can I Build A Pergola?

Property boundary regulations can vary from council to council, but typically, your pergola must be at least 1 meter from each lot boundary to avoid impacting your neighbours’ homes or obstructing their views. A structure must be at least 6 metres off the front boundary. Check with your local council to ensure any additional permits such as a relaxation is applied for before building your pergola.

Can I Install A Pergola Over An Easement?

An easement or asset is something that belongs to the authority and may pass through your land. Your property title will show any easements to the land, such as a sewer or stormwater pipe.

Often an easement means you are not able to build in this area. However, your local council can advise further, as the rules vary depending on your state and the type of easement.

Does building a patio or outdoor space really add value to your property?

The Australian lifestyle is deeply connected with the outdoors. The mostly sunny and warm climate coupled with a love for barbecues and gatherings make outdoor spaces in the home not just desirable but almost essential. The question for many Australian homeowners, however, is whether investing in a patio or outdoor living space truly enhances the value of their property.

According to numerous real estate agents, the answer is unequivocally yes.

One of the top estate agents in Australia, John Schwarzer of Highland Sutherland Shire and St George, suggests that, since they offer such ease of living without the level of maintenance of inside spaces, outdoor entertaining spaces are now probably the most important part of a home. “All the best-selling properties now have great outdoor entertaining spaces, especially with in-built kitchens, dining and lounging areas,” he says.

Statistics released by Australian Property Investor in 2022 indicate that adding a patio can offer homeowners between 65 – 75% return on their investment. Open Agent on the other hand, suggests a new patio can offer 100% return, while a refurbishment of an existing patio can bring in a massive 500%. The truth is, it’s difficult to quantify the precise return on what you spend when adding a patio so it’s not a decision to make frivolously. It’s important to note too, that carefully selecting who you partner with to build your patio is essential since the quality of the finished product will impact any return.

Your needs and circumstances will of course also influence whether a new patio is right for your home as well as the design of any patio you decide to build. A good rule of thumb is:

1. If you’re living in your forever home (or at least not planning on moving for some time) design your patio on your current and future outdoor lifestyle needs. Keep in mind that your home may be sold or passed onto family in the years ahead. Take resale and ongoing use into consideration, yet make the space something designed to meet your preferences and specifications.

2. If you’re not living in your forever home and are looking to spruce up your property for the best resale, design a patio that will attract and impress your target buyers and act as a true extension of your home.

3. If you’re contemplating a patio for an investment property, consider a design that will yield a higher rental return and differentiates your property from other rentals on the market in your local area.

Insulated

Continuing from this sound advice, let’s delve deeper into how you can maximise the value and appeal of your patio or outdoor space, irrespective of your specific situation.

Tailoring your patio to the Australian climate

The design of your patio should take into account Australia’s diverse climate. For sunnier areas, incorporating shading solutions such as pergolas and awnings is key. In regions prone to unpredictable weather, consider versatile features like outdoor heaters, a covered section or a fully enclosed patio. Choosing materials that are not only durable but also complement the Australian landscape is vital for both aesthetics and longevity.

The power of a well-planned outdoor kitchen

As John Schwarzer highlighted, outdoor kitchens are becoming a focal point in Australian homes. A well-equipped outdoor kitchen extends the functionality of your patio, making it an ideal space for entertaining. Investing in a servery, quality appliances, ample storage, and weather-resistant materials can significantly enhance the appeal and utility of your outdoor space.

Landscaping and garden integration

A patio should seamlessly blend with its surroundings. Thoughtful landscaping that integrates native plants and sustainable gardening practices can transform your outdoor area into an eco-friendly sanctuary. This not only enhances the beauty of the space but also appeals to the burgeoning segment of environmentally conscious buyers.

Lighting and ambience

Proper lighting can dramatically change the ambience of your outdoor space. Subtle, energy-efficient lighting can create a warm and inviting atmosphere, extending the usability of your patio into the evening. Consider solar-powered options for an eco-friendly and cost-effective solution.

The importance of quality craftsmanship

The craftsmanship of your patio or outdoor space is paramount. High-quality construction not only ensures durability but also adds to the aesthetic appeal. Employing reputable patio builders who understand the nuances of Australian climate and lifestyle can make a significant difference in the overall quality and appeal of your outdoor space.

In essence, whether you are living in your forever home, preparing to sell, or investing in a rental property, a well-designed patio can significantly enhance both the value and enjoyment of your Australian home. It’s a space where memories are made, a haven for relaxation, and a hub for social gatherings. By considering factors such as climate adaptability, functionality, and quality craftsmanship, you can create an outdoor space that not only meets your current needs but also serves as a valuable asset in the future.

After all, in the great Australian tradition of embracing the outdoors, a thoughtfully designed patio or outdoor space is not just an extension of your home, it’s a way of life.
